[comp.org.eff.talk] Cyberspace

sean@ms.uky.edu (Sean Casey) (06/22/91)

Cyberspace = computer internetworks

no, wait...

Cyberspace = an internetworked user environment

hmmm, no, because...

Cyberspace = simulations using combinations of 3D optical, aural, and
             tactile output

hmm grumble, I know...

Cyberspace = A William Gibson creation, "the matrix", fiction, a dangerous
VR created by networked computers in the dark future

maybe...

Cyberspace = A groovy romantic term used by Usenetters in lieu of more
accurate but _square_ sounding terms that aren't as likely
             to be published

nah...

I wonder how long till people start putting "Cyberspace" in RFCs?

[various other attempts at definition omitted]

Cyberspace = that portion of the universe residing inside of computers.

For most practical purposes it can be regarded as an alternate
universe with a different topology and different physical laws from
the space our bodies reside in. (Where our *minds* reside is a matter
for philosophical debate, but not totally irrelevant.)

Don't define cyberspace: move through it! And don't worry about what your
"body" is - just do whatever you're doing!
