AMATEUR RADIO NEWS FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER, 1984

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                              REPEATER UPDATE

John, KF7B, has contacted the Arizona Repeaters Owners Ass. and has good news.
The 144 to 145 Mhz FM Repeater sub bands are available for "Back Porch"
type repeaters. A Back Porch repeater is one which runs a 100 watts
or less and has an maximum antenna height of 100 feet. This is perfect for
our application. The two meter frequency pair that has been approved for our
club is: 144.550 Mhz in and 145.150 Mhz out. Bud, W5BDZ, has all the hardware
to get the two repeater going, the only thing needed is to order the crystals.
We have been talking about running the two meter repeater as a split site
system, placing the receiver at the Deer Valley campus and the transmitter at
someones home QTH. This will eliminate the need of a duplexer. We would link
the repeater together via the 443 Mhz repeater. We are in need for both finical
and time support to make it happen. There are three xtals to buy and several
hours of debugging. Tom, WB7ASR, has the two meter receive xtal on order. If
you want help with this project, contact John, KF7B, at x4008, in Deer Valley.
The target date to have the two meter repeater up and on the air is mid-January.

A XMAS PRESENT TO THE WORLD FROM A GERMAN AMATEUR RADIO CLUB

Since the ionosphere is at a low density level due to the eleven year
sum spot cycle, a German Amateur Radio Club will launch four barium capsuls
into the ionosphere that will cause the ionosphere to become extremity
dense. The metallic powder will be launched from a air-craft on December 25th,
at 1208 UTC (0508 MST) to a elevation of 60,000 nautical miles. Radio conditions
from 30 Mhz and up should be considerly improved for about four to six hours.
Also take note, with the metallic powder in the sky, the sun rise should be
one not to miss.

                     VU2RG IS INDIA'S NEW LEADER

Rajiv Gandhi, VU2RG, son of India's slain leader Indira Gandhi, is prime
minister of the worlds largest democracy. Chosen by his party and sworn in to
office only hours after his mother's death on October 31, Rajiv will head the
country until at least January, when national elections must be held. A former
pilot with Air India, he entered the political arena in 1981, when he became
a member of Parliament. His political future was all but sealed when his mother
named him a general secretary of the ruling Congress Party.

                           HAMS IN SPACE

The latest word on the proposed April 1985 Amateur Radio operation from abord
the Space Shuttle is that Astronaut Anthony England, W0ORE, will not be the only
ham aboard. Dr. John-David Bartoe, W4NYZ, of the Naval Research Laboratory will
be accompaning him. Dr. Bartoe will be a payload specialist for the
CHALLENGER STS-51F mission. Groundwork for the project is proceeding on
the assumption that formal notification of acceptance from NASA is forthcoming.

ALso, Dr. Ron Parise, WA4SIR, is schedled to fly on STS-61F, as a Payload
Specialist. Dr. Parise is an astronomer with a Phd from the University of
Florida (1979) and is 33 years old. He has been a licensed amateur since
he was 11 having held prior calls WN8JBR and WA8MHD. Ron is a native of
Ohio, is married and has a young son. Regarding his operating Amateur Radio
from the shuttle, Ron says he is "ENTHUSIASTIC" and looks forward "to bring
some radios aboard." Ron says he will support proposals to NASA for Amateur
Radio activity on the mission he will be flying.

AMSAT-OSCAR 10 HAS NEW OPERATING SCHEDULE

This new schedule is effective immediately, and should not require any
modifications until mid-January. Remember that OSCAR-10's orbit of 699.5
minutes is measured in 256 divisions, with zero starting at perigee. This
measurement is called Mean Anomaly.

                    MEAN ANOMALY	MODE	TIME

                            0-99	B	Mon-Sat.
                         100-117	L	Mon-Sat.
                         100-117	B	Sun.

SO FAR I HAVN'T DONE MUCH WITH A GATEWAY FOR AO-10
IT'S DIFFICULT TO GATE IT TO THE LOCAL 2 METER NET BECAUSE OF THE
PROXIMITY OF THE TWO 2 METER STATIONS. MANY OF THE HF STATIONS ALSO HAVE
AO-10 CAPABILITY. COUPLE ALL THAT WITH THE CHANGING SCHEDULE AND SOMETIMES
MARGINAL SIGNALS FROM AO-10 SO I SAY (ON THE SATELLITE BEACON) "MAILBOX/
GATEWAY AVAILABLE ON REQUEST". SO FAR IAN (ZL1AOX) HAS BEEN THE ONLY TAKER.
I HEARD YOU ON AO-10 EVERYBODYS SIGNAL WAS TOO WEAK TO COPY HERE.

The HF system includes a transceiver (IC-720A),a 30 meter beam
(KLM 30M-3) up 42 feet, and a Swan tri-bander up 55 feet.

The VHF system is a 2 meter transceiver (IC-27A) and a Ringo
Ranger up about 20 feet.

The satellite station's uplink is an IC-471, a Mirage D1010,
45 feet of half inch hardline, and a KLM 18-C cross yagi.
The downlink is a KLM 22-C cross yagi, a AR^2 GaAsFET preamp
at the antenna, and an IC-271.

The system uses 3 TAPR TNC's and can link HF stations to either
the satellite or the 2 meter LAN which includes the Phoenix and
Tucson area.
Work is proceeding on the computer interface and software to
enable the 720A to scan the hf bands. Also in the mill is the
system which will tune the satellite station automatically.

Other functions supported are message store and forward, file
upload/download, and information about stations heard or connected.
The computer is a Xerox 820 board with two eight inch disk drives.
The HF port is 300 baud, 200 hz shift, centered at 14.101,3 Mhz.on
20 meters (That's 14.103 Mhz. LSB using a TAPR board) and 10.147,9
Mhz. on 30 meters (That's 10.149,6 Mhz. LSB with a TAPR board).
The hf radio is on 20 meters in the daytime and 30 meters at night.
The VHF port is on 146.10/70 1200 baud, NBFM.
The system is on forever. ...Well almost forever.
