[alt.toolkits.xview] XV_KEY_DATA_REMOVE_PROC doesn't seem to work?

The example using XV_KEY_DATA_REMOVE_PROC in the manual looks straight-forward enough, and I coded something that was essentially the same as shown on pages 172-173.  Problem is that the free_data routine does not seem to be called (as the manual claims it will) when the object that the XV_KEY_DATA is attached to gets destroyed.  Any ideas?
