[comp.sys.atari.st.tech] More on multisyncs

ekrimen@ecst.csuchico.edu (Ed Krimen) (10/31/90)

I'm back on the hunt for multisyncs. Here's more info on the Wuztek.
If anyone sees any deficiencies in the specs, I'd like to know.
Moreover, Paul, the technician I talked to at Wuztek, said that LeRoy
Valley for ST Informer and Greg (missed his last name) from STart are
doing reviews on this monitor; the STI article should be published in
the next issue. Paul said that they use a Japanese monitor that a
lot of OEMs, like Unisys, use.

Here are the specs for the Omnimon Rainbow:

Picture tube: 14 inch, dark-tint, non-glare, 0.31mm dot pitch, 90
              degree deflection 55% transmission
Resolution: Maximum 1024x768 dots
Display colors : TTL: 64/16/8/4
                 Analog: unlimited
Scanning frequency: vertical: 45Hz to 90Hz
                    Horizontal: 15Khz to 36Khz
Display area: 245mm x 180mm
Power input: 90-130V AC (60Hz)
             180-260V AC (50Hz)
Power consumption: 85W
Environmental: Operation: 0-40 degrees C
               Storage : -30 to 60 degrees C
Dimension: 360W x 335H x 375D mm

If you see anything out of the ordinary, let me know. From looking
at my notes from other posts, the scanning freq. ranges are right.
Chris Karchnak on Fidonet and a couple people here have seen
Panasync's and like them. The Panasync's have 0.28mm dot pitch and
the Wuztek has 0.31. Does it make a difference? Which one would be
preferable?

The way I see it is, the Omnimon would cost $599 or I could go for a
Panasync (approx. $450 plus Omniswitch ($80); roughly $550). The
Omnimon comes with a switcher and a TSR for running mono and color at
the same time via Revolver. Revolver doesn't work on the STe, so
that does me no good.

Anyway, this compares well against a mono/color combo. Someone I
know is willing to buy my color for $250. A mono monitor would cost,
at best, $150 and then Monitor Master for $30. So, to round it off,
it comes to around $450. The multisyncs have a 14" screen, which is
considerably larger than the mono and even the color monitors. I use
my ST a lot, so it may be worth the extra $100-$150. It's just a
matter of figuring out which monitor to use.

There is also a Sony monitor, which I'm told is pretty good, so I'm
looking into that one as well.

Before I decide, I think I'm going to wait for the reviews in the
mags and try to get a look at that Sony.

Thanks for all your help!!

I have a friend that has a Wuztek setup. He has problems with some programs
causing a system crash. What seems to happen is the program in question
attempts to change the scan rate on the monitor, and the monitor switches into
mono mode (causing a system reboot). One such program is Altered Beasts. You
may want to talk to the Wuztek folks about this before buying.

Thanks for the info! Does he have an ST/Mega or STe? Does he have
the SoftSwitch installed? This may be the problem. From what I
understand, you put their SoftSwith TSR before Revolver in the AUTO
folder, so when you switch to a partition in mono, it switches
automatically. On the other hand, this could hardly be the problem
because he wouldn't be able to load Altered Beasts as a Revolver
partition -- or could he? In any case, Revolver doesn't work on the
STe, so I really wouldn't have a use for SoftSwitch. But thanks for
telling me anyway. I'll ask Wuztek about it.

How's the monitor though?? How does it look? Is the color and
monochrome good? How does it compare to other multisyncs or the
Atari color and mono monitors? Thanks!!

The Panasync is available in Santa Clara at Access for $399, $429 several
other places. I'm inclined to think a Panasonic with .28 dot pitch would be
preferable due to better specs, a better reputation, and lower cost.

I've made my ST work with a Sony 1304 monitor - good picture in color, .26mm
dot pitch, but the cost is higher ($629 I think is the cheapest I've seen).

Just a quick note, I saw the Codehead's 16Mhz TT030 at the Boston
Atari fest the weekend before last, and it was running with a
Panasonic 1381 (the cheaper one that goes to 1024x768 interlaced .28mm
dot pitch). There was some bowing of the screen on the far right, but
ST Mono looked *great* on it, (as did TT medium rez, 640 x 480 x16
colors). I will be checking out the specs further (does the TT go to
70hz vertical refresh when running duochrome, or does it fake it?),
and hopefully see another one running on some "PC" to double check the
image quality. Current mail order is as low as $350.00 for the
monitor (sans shipping and credit card surcharge?) and you know the
prices and capabilities of the adaptor boxes and cables. Hey, I don't
really! Could somebody post how those various adaptor cable, box and
software combos stack up?? Thanks,

Bob Pegram

P.S. (and you thought that was a .sig!) email me and I'll summarise if desired.

Please let me know what you find when you see it running on a PC and
about duochrome going to 70hz. A couple of people in c.s.a.s and
someone on Fidonet have mentioned this monitor, so I've been looking
into it. I picked up Computer Shopper last night and am going to call
a couple of places to ask about specific specs of the C1381, like
vertical and horizontal frequency ranges and frequency bandwidth,
although I'm sure they'll be okay. (It's amazing how much one learns
when he wants something good at a good price that works right.) I hope
the "bowing" isn't too bad, but that's good to hear that the
monochrome looked great.

If I don't get on of the guys on Fidonet to make a cable for me, I'll
probably go for Omniswitch from Talon ($75 mail order), but I really
don't need the drive switcher and a couple of the other things it
has. E. Arthur Brown has a switcher for $60, but I don't know how
good it is. I may just spend the extra $15 for a quality product.

Speaking about stacking up, my monitor is going to be pretty high off
my desk with all the things under it. I may need a stool! At the
moment, I have an ICD case under my monitor, an under-the-monitor
power-pad, and then two two-inch high blocks so the cables from my
STe can go underneath everything. With the Omniswitch and the 14"
monitor, it's going to be like sitting in the front row of a movie
theatre! Just hope the show's good! :^)
