[comp.sys.atari.st.tech] Running Unix Windows - Summary

rcte2p@jetson.uh.edu (Paul S. Sears) (11/14/90)

I want to thank everyone who helped me get Unix Windows (uw) to work. Here is
a summary of what I was told:

First, IGNORE the read.me file and don't use the startgem.prg to autoboot uw.
Uw.prg is NOT the program that you want to run -- it will lock up if you try to
run it directly. Win.prg is. So, click on win.prg and then you should soon be
in the program with a blank terminal screen. Configure the program to how you
want it to be (i.e., RS232, Function keys, Default path....) and then save the
configuration.
Next, make sure that you have uw on the host end and properly compiled for
the system you are on. I am running mine on Ultrix 4.0 (4.3BSD) so it compiled
just fine.
Now connect to your host, logon and then run uw on the host side (remeber,
you are already using the atari side of uw as a terminal). Now just open
windows as you need. Each window is a separate process. There are also
utilities to help you run certain protocols, and tools to help make your
windows nicer.

Now for some comments:

  1) Not to slow, even at 1200 baud, but I would like to see so more buffering
of a line before it is drawn on the screen....

  2) My biggest quirk is that I can't redefine the backspace and delete keys.
When I use Uniterm, I have the two keys reversed but in uw, the backspace sends
a ^H which means nothing to my host. I might look into the source abit on that
one, but for now, I will just use X-utilities to redefine my keyboard.

I must congradulate the authors on this great program. I even got a response
to my problem from one of them. Thanks to everyone.
