[net.ham-radio] portable SW radios query

gbr@mb2c.UUCP (Jerry Ruhno) (01/11/85)

I am interested in listening to SW and I would like to get a good
portable radio. So far the only discussion I have seen has been on
the Sony ICF-2002 and ICF-7600. Are there any other radios out there
I should consider? I don't know anything about short wave so I am not
sure what I should look for. Also if I can still find a Sony ICF-6500
is it a good radio to get. I know it has an LCD display but does it
have quartz lock tuning? Since I am new to this I am not even sure
if I should be looking at portables or a base unit. Any and all
suggestions will be greatly appreciated. If there are any books or
magazines I should read to help me get started let me know. Thanks.

The Sony models ICF-2002 and the ICF-7600D (note the D) are the
same radio; the 7600D is the European/Japanese model and is now
available with a power supply for 220/110 VAC.

I'd recommend it. I've been a ham for a long time and an SWL for
even longer, and because of various deed restrictions and some
previous financial difficulty I sold off all my high freq ham
gear about four years ago. Since then, I've had a hankering
to listen again, so went out and bought a 7600D at 47th St. Photo
(about $195 and worth it). With the external antenna it comes with
strung out and clipped in my backyard, this little radio works
at least as well as some of the HF gear I used to have.

Go ahead and get one. I no nothing, however, about the other
radios you mentioned.

Sounds good. I've been looking at short wave radios also (not necessarily
portable). Does anyone else have any other suggestions?

I am especially interested in receiving Hebrew-language broadcasts
from Kol Yisrael (the Voice of Israel). I have the following
questions: Does this station have any Hebrew-language broadcasts?
If not, has anyone ever received this station (especially in the
mountain area of the U.S.--Colorado, New Mexico, etc.).

If someone has gotten this station, what receiver were you using?
Would I have any trouble receiving it with the Sony mentioned above?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, KOL has Hebrew broadcasts, and some of them are beamed
to North America. I've heard it quite well on my 7600D with
the outside antenna, but I'm near New York City (and there's
no mountains around here, darn it).
