Just thought I'd pass along this info... This weekend I was swapping monitors (I have a rather elaborate setup allowing me to have video tuner, VCR, ST, or 8-bit sound and video come through some combination of stereo, VCR, or composite monitor) and managed to fry my sound chip - at least, the ST was no longer making sound, and the serial communications weren't working properly. Everything else appeared fine, however (though I didn't try the floppy). At any rate, while diagnosing the problem I pulled out the sound chip, and was surprised to see that the computer booted and ran perfectly (of course, no sound, and still no serial). I was surprised that the computer could run without that chip, however. Anyway, being lucky enough to have a socketed sound chip, I simply swapped it for a new one ($10, B&C Computervision), and everything works perfectly. -- ################################################################################ # Bill Sheppard -- bills@microware.com -- {uunet, sun}!mcrware!mwca!bill # # Microware Systems Corporation --- OS-9: Seven generations beyond __/_!! # #######Opinions expressed are my own, though you'd be wise to adopt them!#######
