[comp.sys.atari.st.tech] hard drive problems

I am using a BMS 100 drive adaptor and an adaptec 4070 controller with
a Seagate RLL 277 65meg drive. The drive recently started to give me some
trouble so I bought a second one. I am planning to get the original one fixed
and would like to use both at once. Before sending it away I thought I would
try seeing how both work together.

I tried using Atari's HDX 3.01 formatter to check on the second drive, but
it only sees unit 0. I have the address jumpers set correctly on the two
drives. In addition the AHDI autoboot program does not install any of the
logical partitions on the second unit. Berkely supplied a program called
"INSTALL" which does let GEM know about the second unit, but I thought the
autobooter would check for all active drives.

Does anyone have any suggestions on suitable software combinations for
formatting, installing and booting up the second drive?

In addition I am having several intermittent problems. First the drive does
not always initialize properly when first turned on. I must power down the
drive unit and turn it on again. Second I get occasional alert boxes when
doing file operations stating that Drive C is damaged. Most of the time this
causes the system to freeze up. After rebooting the same file is ok. This all
happens with the new drive. Is the new drive defective? Or is something wrong
with the BMS board or the controller? Are there any tests that can be run to
isolate the problem? I would like to get the issues resolved before the
warrantee on the new drive expires.
