[comp.sys.atari.st.tech] Question, RE: ICD host adaptor & Conner Data HD

Bryan_Jones_Woodworth@cup.portal.com (01/10/91)

I have a question. I will be buying a 90 meg 18ms CDC (Conner Data
Communications??) hard disk drive. Will this be supported by the
ICD host adaptor with the clock? I ask this because of the following
text I read:

>I own two ICD Host Adapters. If you plan on buying a new ICD Advantage
>Host Adapter, TRASH THE SOFTWARE! The programs are really poor. They
>don't support SASI devices anymore, and you can't enter your own HD data
>for off-brand drive mechs. I use the Supra software with my Advantage
>ST.

Was wondering, is the Conner an "off-brand" drive mech?? Whatever, anyway
as you can see I am a novice and need.. HELP!!!

Email is fine if you are the shy type.

thanks,

I'm going to be mealy mouthed here, as I have been too often incorrect
in my answers recently. 8-) The Contol Data Corp (owned by Seagate
now?) drive will probably be fine, it's just that ICD no longer does a
complete low level reformat on embedded SCSI drives. I have read in
comp.sys.amiga.hardware that some drives don't even allow one, and
have to be returned to the factory if they need it. Even if I'm
wrong about the low level format, it is true that the ICD software no
longer uses its own database of drive characteristics for SCSI drives,
instead it queries the embedded drive, and uses that info for the
formatting that it does. The information is written by the drive's
manufacturer on some "hidden" (negative nos?) sectors of the drive, if
it's blown away, you're SOL - until you get a more DIY type of
formatter. ICD does have one for their earlier (3.XX) driver
software.

good luck,

Thanks Robert! Ok well I'm sure this HD will work since the person who's
selling it uses it with his ST..
