Subject: Fourth ARRL Networking Conference - Preliminary Information

The Fourth ARRL Computer Networking Conference will be in San Francisco
this year on March 30th, 1985. The conference, co-sponsored by the
American Radio Relay League and the Pacific Packet Radio Society, will
be held in conjunction with the Tenth West Coast Computer Faire, which
runs from March 30th through April 2nd at San Francisco's new Moscone
Convention Center. The tremendous growth and interest in packet radio
terminals, equipment, networks and applications promises to make this
conference one of the largest and best attended of the conferences
given so far. Here is some preliminary information you will need to have
to attend this conference:

Location -- The Networking Conference and all activities of the Faire
will be held in Moscone Center in downtown San Francisco. To attend the
Conference you will need an entrance ticket to the Faire. All Faire
visitors may attend the ARRL Conference at no additional charge. All
sessions are open to the public, and persons with no previous knowledge
of packet radio systems and procedures are welcome to sit in and learn
what they can about this new area of personal computer networking.

Dates -- The Conference will be held all day Saturday, March 30th.
The Faire runs from March 30th through April 2nd.

Times -- The Faire hours for sessions and exhibits are 10:00 a.m. to
6:00 p.m. every day. The Conference sessions will run all day Saturday,
from 10:00 to 6:00. An exhibit booth demonstrating packet radio equipment
and operation will be sponsored by the Pacific Packet Radio Society, and
will be open all four days of the Faire.

Tickets -- On-site registration for four days is $20. On-site registration
for one day is $12. Pre-registration for four days is $15. Through special
arrangements with the Faire and the ARRL, a special pre-registration fee
of $20 will purchase a four day ticket to the Faire and a complete set of
the ARRL Conference Proceedings. Send a check for $20 and a self-addressed
stamped envelope to H. Magnuski at the address listed below. Any checks
received after March 16th cannot be guaranteed the special rate. Make the
check payable to H. Magnuski.

Conference Proceedings -- The ARRL Computer Networking Conference papers
have been a primary source of information on developments in amateur
packet radio and digital communications between personal computers.
The Proceedings will be for sale at the Faire for $10, and may be obtained
from the ARRL by mail thereafter. They are included in the special pre-
registration package mentioned above. The deadline for submitting papers
to the Proceedings is March 1st, 1985. Contact Paul Rinaldo, ARRL,
225 Main Street, Newington, CT 06111 (203-666-1541) for author's kits
or other questions on submitting a presentation.

Faire Events -- The West Coast Computer Faire has been the premier trade
show in the development of the microcomputer industry. This tenth anniversary
session promises to be jam-packed with sessions and exhibits on personal
computing. Hundreds of leading manufacturers have signed up for the Faire,
and there will be sessions and seminars on almost every aspect of personal
computing.

Conference Events -- Times and places for all the networking conference
events have not been finalized. Here is a preliminary outline of activities:

March 29th - 9:00 to Midnite - Network Management meeting at the Front Page
Bar, 20 Anne Street, SF. Everyone is welcome. This will be a test of how
late the East Coast packeteers can stay up when beers >= 2.

 March 30th - 10:00 - A Packet Radio Primer Session by Pete Eaton, WB9FLW.
11:00 - Applications of Packet Radio Panel Session
                      Sponsored by Andy Cromarty, N6JLJ.
12:00 - Lunch break. Location to be announced later.
1:00 - Technical Papers on packet radio and digital communica-
                      tions. Presentations from the Proceedings.
6:00 - End of technical sessions
8:00 - Conference dinner. Location and price to be announced.

March 31st - 10:00 - Meeting of the ARRL Digital Communications Committee
                      Location to be announced.

Housing -- Bill Stevens has reserved a block of rooms for visiting packeteers
at the Hotel Union Square, 114 Powell Street, San Francisco, CA 94102.
Telephone is 415-397-3000. This hotel is three blocks from Moscone Center,
and is one of the least expensive hotels suitable for conference attendees.
Contact me immediately if you know you are coming and wish to reserve a room
through Bill. Rates start at $60 for one double bed in a small room (the
hotel management said this room is so small they only rent it to Europeans.)
$65 will get you a small room with two twins. $70 rents a larger room with
one double bed. To get to the hotel, take the Airporter Bus from SFO
(approx. $6.00) to the downtown terminal. The Hotel is two blocks away, and
you can walk or take a cab. A shuttle bus to the airport stops at the Hotel.
Bill has arranged for rates somewhat less than those listed above.

For those of you with more money, the Faire has made special arrangements
with four hotels in SF during the conference:

Hotel Meridien, 50 3rd Street, San Francisco, CA 94103. 415-974-6400
This is a new 700 room 36 story hotel with a French accent. Only two
blocks from Moscone, the special rates start at $75 for a single,
and $95 for a double. Parking is $11 per night.

Sheraton Palace, Market & New Montgomery, SF. 415-392-8600
This is the Faire Headquarters hotel, two blocks from Moscone.
Rates are $95 single, $110 double.

St. Francis, Powell & Geary, SF. 415-397-7000
About four blocks from Moscone, the special rates range from $95 for
    a single and $105 for a double.

Holiday Inn - Civic Center, 50 8th Street, SF. 415-626-6103
This hotel is quite far from the convention, and is in a crummy
neighborhood. Rates are $68 for a single, $78 for a double.

To obtain these special rates, you must request space in writing and your
request must be received NO LATER THAN FEBRUARY 28th. The room blocks are
released on that date! No phone reservations accepted. Indicate your first,
second and third choices, names of all occupants, arrival and departure dates.
Final confirmations will be sent to you by the hotel. Cancellations until
March 14th to the address below, thereafter to the hotel. Contact the hotel
for any other changes. Mail your reservation letter to

     C.F. Housing Bureau
     P.O. Box 5612
     San Francisco, CA 94101

Faire Contacts -- Any questions about the Faire itself may be directed to
Computer Faire, Inc. (A Prentice-Hall Company), 611 Veterans Boulevard,
Redwood City, CA 94063. Telephone is 415-364-4294.

Coordination Frequencies -- There will be packet radio activity on 145.01 and
146.58 MHz. Voice channel coordination frequencies have not yet been assigned.

Expect in about one month a revised and hopefully more final version
of this information bulletin. Please give this letter the widest
possible distribution.

The members of the Pacific Packet Radio Society look forward to your visit,
and sincerely hope you will have a pleasant stay in San Francisco.

73, Hank
