[comp.sys.atari.st.tech] Host Adapters, Hard Drives

n8510295@unicorn.cc.wwu.edu (Somers Marl A) (04/05/91)

I have yet to aquire a HD, but am hoping to soon. I have some literature
from Toad Computers, wherein they offer an ICD Advantage Plus Host
Adapter for 99 bucks. My question is: is this just a cable with
the infamous 19-pin Atari HD plug on end and a more standard plug
on the other? Or is there a controller included? If so, is it SCSI
or what? Finally, any comments/advice in the area of hard drives
will be appreciated.

Thanx in advance, Marl

As far as I am aware, you get the cable, board (DMA<->SCSI etc.) and software.
I think you get a clock with this adaptor too. Finally, make sure you don't
get bitten by the `famous' (apparently) ICD DMA noise problem - I did :-)

BTW, thanks to all those who replied to my query about this (Mickey Boyd,
Rana Dutt, Roger Sheppard, John Kawakami) - it's getting sorted out as we
speak...

It is an ACSI (Atari) to SCSI Adaptor, which may include a real time
clock. And it's worth its money.

You should consider using this adaptor with a Quantum Pro-Drive,
speedy, nearly no noise, 3 1/2 inch. Works fine.

Disclaimer: I have no connection to ICD or Quantum.

Can you (or someone) please post a description of this problem?

Thanks,

I posted a query a few weeks back which described a problem with my new HD.
The video display appeared to lose sync (i.e. go haywire) intermittently. I was
told by fellow netters that this was due to `noise' generated by the ICD host
adaptor, which was interfering with the video circuitry.

This is a known problem at ICD. Apparently they either ship you a different
DMA cable, or suggest connecting a 22pF capacitor across pins 12 and 13 of the
DMA IN connector.

Seasoned netters: please flame if I've misunderstood any of this :-)
