[comp.sys.atari.st.tech] Why does my monitor black out?

Can someone help me with a problem? My SM124 monochrome monitor experiences
occasional periods of black out -- I'll be running something and everything
goes dark! It lasts for a few minutes, then comes back on its own. The
little green power indicator stays on, so presumably the power supply itself
is ok. No, it doesn't seem related to a heat failure, since it can fail
soon after turning it on. Cycling the power doesn't have any obvious effect,
and I have tried it in two different systems with the same result. I haven't
opened this monitor, although I have adjusted others -- non-conducting
screwdriver in hand, other hand behind my back! Where's the loose connection?

I had a similar problem with my SM124. I tried for a couple of years
to track it down, without success. Then I read in STWorld that it may
be a problem with the flyback transformer. So, I ordered a new flyback
(no small task) and replaced it. Unfortunately, that was not the problem.
Don't try this unless you know what you are doing.

Soon afterwards, I needed to extend the length of my monitor cable so
that I could set my computer on the floor. I got a cable from Best
Electronics and soldered it to the monitor board. This eliminated the
blacking problem. It was either the cable, or something in the connector.
Unfortunately, after adding the new cable, the quality of the screen
image was degraded (looks like interference). My best guess on the
cause of this is that the monitor cable I got is not sufficently
shielded. I have been unable to restore the original quality of the
image, but my screen no longer goes blank.
