[comp.sys.atari.st.tech] How to add a hard disk

draper@buster.cps.msu.edu (Patrick J Draper) (05/27/91)

Hi,

I've got an NEC 20 meg hard disk that I'd like to hook up to my Atari
520 ST.

Does anyone know of an interface that I can build or buy for it?

Thanks

Easiest way is to buy a SCSI-adaptor board from ICD,Inc and an ADAPTEC
4000 board (SCSI to ST506).

But I should think there must be some adaptors that handle ST506
drives directly or connects ATARI-ST's DMA socket to a standard SASI
(50 pins) drive. Does anyone know a vendor of these adaptors?

As the price of a 20 MB drive is almost nil (US$20) and 40 MB SASI
drives are quickly disapppearing (US$400), the cost of buying an
ADAPTEC SCSI board appears to be too expensive.
Yes, a DIY project for SASI is rather easy, but I would think buying
another ADAPTEC board second hand will save the trouble.

ST506 interface? SCSI? ESDI?

This got me thinking. Is it possible to connect a SMD hard disk such
as a Fujitsu double eagle (300 Mb, approx.) to an Atari ST? The
reason I ask is that I have access to a used one. By the way it has a
controller that converts SMD to UNIBUS.

Cheers,

There are lots of hostadapters that convert SCSI to ACSI. If you want
to connect a drive to your ST, you'll better look for a way to convert
ESDI/ST506/SMD/whatever to SCSI. I know of ESDI/SCSI and ST506/SCSI
controllers, but I haven't heard anything about SMD.

My NEC is an ST506 interface design. But while we're on the subject,
isn't it easier to hook a SCSI or ESDI drive to an ST?

The Adaptec 4000A will probably be the best solution for this. This is
a ST506/SCSI controller which is also used in the original SH205.
Therefore, most software will be compatible with it.

You will also need some SCSI/ACSI hostadapter - any brand will do.
If you hook up a SCSI drive to your ST, you'll only need this
hostadapter and no separate controller, so you're right to suppose
this is much easier. It is not easier to connect an ESDI drive to
your ST - you will then need a ESDI/SCSI controller to convert
ESDI to SCSI.

It may be possible for you to obtain from atari (Fear and loathing!)
(as a 'spare part') a Megafile 30 controller board. Presuming yours isn't
DOA (as my first two were) it is a direct ACSI-RLL adapter. Now, lots
of people will jump on me and say 'but the NEC is only MFM' - this is
true - however I have had a very good run with NEC harddisks, in
particular with my 3142, which has been running RLL for about a year
on a daily basis with no problems whatsoever. The 20MB unit may do the same.
Find someone who will let you dissect their Megafile and try it :)

Good Luck!

Matthew
