I am in the market for a new HF rig. The main features I am looking for are: o Portability - not necessarily for mobile use - I am a coop student and my address changes several times a year o Built-in general coverage receiver o All solid state A few friends have recommended the Kenwood TS-430S and I am presently leaning in in that direction. I would appreciate any comments about the TS-430S or any other suggestions or advice (nothing too trivial). (Please reply by mail). My feelings on portability is that it is not really a matter of which HF RIG is more portable than any other (unless you DO wish to go mobile); but rather, it is the ANTENNA that will make the difference. There are several different antenna types that will either go up indoors, or will go up and come down smoothly. These are something that I would suggest looking in to for someone who moves around a lot. There is a pretty decent book out by Dan Fox, W2IQD, Called "The Handbook of Apartment Operation" that describes some of these antennas. It is published by Foundation Publishing, PO Box 805, Merrimac NH 03054. I have no financial interest in promoting this book, although it is one that I have read and think that it has some good advice to offer in this regard. Also, one whould remember that "there is no free lunch" - you pay for portability in performance. 73, Peter Baldwin, WA1SNH ptb@mitre-bedford

PHIL, I OWN A YAESU FT757 AND SUGGEST YOU TAKE A LOOK AT IT. THE KENWOOD 430 IS REALLY A DEFEATURED FT757. THE 757 COMES WITH BUILT IN KEYER, FM, FILTERS WHICH ARE OPTIONAL ON THE KENWOOD. I AM VERY HAPPY WITH MINE. YAESU HAD SOME START UP PROBLEMS WITH THIS RIG BUT THEY HAVE THEM ALL CURED NOW-- 73 DE VAL, W5PUT
