[comp.sys.atari.st.tech] Ste DMA chip replacement

csual@warwick.ac.uk (Jason Morris) (06/12/91)

I know that early STe's were affected by a problem in the DMA chip which
corrupted some hard disks, and that Atari would fix the problem for free only
if you had a problem with one of their Megafile HD's.
I have an early STe and am thinking of buying a HD soon, but I don't want to
wait until the think screws up before I do anything. How do I tell if I need a
new chip, and if so, what do I have to do if I want it replaced? I don't
expect to get it for free (although I think I should as it was a design
fault), but I just haven't heard anything about this. Could Allan Pratt
give me the official Atari line on this one? Pretty please?
Anybody else got any news on this? E-mail preferred on either:

                jas@uk.ac.warwick.cs
                        or
                csual@uk.ac.warwick.cu

Ta very much,
                 Jas.

In the latest ST Format and I quote:

"Bob Gleadow, Managing Director of Atari UK, is keen to clear the air
about STE DMA problems. As FORMAT reported in issue 16, a faulty DMA
chip in some STEs could result in hard drive data becoming corrupted
after just a few hours' use. Gleadow told FORMAT that if you've got a
problem with your STE, and you can prove it's a legitimate DMA problem,
then Atari will deal with it free of charge. If you feel your STE is
one of the "small" batch of machines that has a duff DMA chip, then
phone Atari on 0753 33344 for the technical department. Oh, and tell
'em ST FORMAT sent you."
