[comp.sys.atari.st.tech] HD appears sluggish

marc@sequoia.cray.com (Marc Bouron) (06/27/91)

Hi ST-people,

Now that I have my HD spinning away without zorching my video display [ :-) ]
I notice that writing to the HD is getting a bit sluggish. I was wondering why?

The drive is Toshiba, host adaptor is ICD. I run NeoDesk 2.0 on TOS 1.0 (yeah,
yeah, I know I ought to fit some new ROMs...). Setting write verify and cache
on or off makes no difference. Now, if I use ICD's RATEHD program, it tells me
the thing is shunting data at 589kB/s with a 25ms access time. That looks to me
to be FAST!!! So any clues why writing is a drag? Has the drive just become
monumentally fragmented?

Any help much appreciated. :-)

Get TOS 1.04. This will speed up HD access dramatically.
