I received the following description of two more bugs in the newest version of IDL (2.0.13) from Wayne Landsman. Wayne's Usenet is currently down so I am forwarding the message for him. Note to pv-wave users: I don't know how any of this affects you. PV-WAVE uses IDL, so it probably applies to you as well, but I don't know what version of IDL you are currently up to. Maybe someone can comment. -- Bruce **************************************************************************** From: APLSP::MOUSSE::LANDSMAN "Wayne Landsman (301)-286-3625" We have had our own serious problem with 2.0.13 -- the histogram plotting mode (!P.PSYM = 10) no longer works. Unfortunately, Dave Stern did not seem anxious about placing a Version 2.0.14 on line. He wanted the next release to be Version 2.1, presumably with the Motif and/or Open Look interface. I did my best to encourage him that it was important to quickly get out a version of IDL without these recently introduced bugs. I'm also trying to get a fix for !SYSERR_STRING on VMS. This system variable was introduced around 2.07 or so, and contains the operating system error message. For example, when trying to read a protected UNIX file, !SYSERR_STRING gives "Permission Denied", which is more informative than the IDL message "Error opening file" in !ERR_STRING. Anyway, on VMS machines, !SYSERR_STRING does not clear itself with each new error, so it quickly becomes unuseable. Wayne -- Bruce L.
