[comp.protocols.time.ntp] Setting up a campus wide ntp system

fwp1@CC.MsState.Edu (Frank Peters) (07/18/90)

Hello,

I've had ntp running on our Sun 4/490 for a couple of months. I'd
like to propogate it out to other systems on campus and I'd like advice
about exactly how to configure it.

     First some background information:

     - We are a SURAnet site.

     - As 'servers' we have available one 4/490, one 4/390 and two
4/280s (we might have a fifth available but probably not).
I'm afraid most of our central server systems are suns.

     - Attached to various of these bigger suns are something over
a hundred diskless, dataless and standalone workstations from
	3/50s to ss1+ systems and a few non-sun boxes.

My inclination (based mostly on ignorance I'm sure) is to have the 4
central boxes each configured with a server entry for one of the stratum-1
clocks listed in the clock.txt file on louie.udel.edu and a peer entry for
the other 3 servers. Each machine would query a different server.

The rest of the machines on campus would then have server entries aimed
at the 4 campus servers.

     Now my questions:

1) Should our central machines query more than one server? There aren't
very many servers listed for the suranet area so this would mean
some servers getting beat on by more than one of our systems.

2) The manual page for ntpd seems to imply that we should have peer entries
for some of the lower stratum clocks since we'll be redistributing
the time to our local workstations.

3) Should our central machines also query some of the stratum-2 machines
out there? If so should these be server or peer entries?

4) Should our client machines have entries for all of our campus servers
or only for a couple of them? Should they have peer entries for other
clients nearby or just for the servers?

Any and all advice on this would be very deeply appreciated.

Thanks,
--Frank
