[comp.protocols.time.ntp] xntpd configuration

deford@mitre.org (Kevin M. Deford) (09/27/90)

After my most recent post, I got several answers regarding time problems on
sun4's in general. I applied the mentioned patches to no avail. Let me
describe my situation a little better to see if anyone as any ideas. We here
at MITRE are allowed on the internet by only one host. This means that ntp
traffic is not allowed from my subnet to the internet. When one looks
at the configuration examples, all of them list primary time servers on the
internet which I cannot get to. I am trying to set up my subnet as though one
of the hosts (the one with the clock) was a primary time server. My problem is
that I cannot get that machine to have a stratum lower than 16. The following
is the ntp.conf file:

#
# My server ntp.conf. These are the 4 stratum 1 and 2 hosts - with linus
# having the clock (I am using the pseudo-clock code right now).
#
peer 129.83.10.1 # linus
peer 129.83.10.2 # faron
peer 129.83.10.10 # sacha
peer 129.83.10.13 # susan

#
# setting up a primary clock. Telling linus that it has a clock.
#
server 127.127.1.0
monitor yes

driftfile /etc/ntp.drift

--------

So my question is how does one set up a primary clock with xntpd on a sun3/470?
Eventually, the entire subnet will be syncronized (90 suns of all
architectures).

Thanks for any (more) advice.
