[comp.protocols.time.ntp] Problems running xntp on a Sun 4/390

matt@avalon.eecs.nwu.edu (Matt Larson) (12/14/90)

I am running xntp version 1.3 on a Sun 4/390 running SunOS 4.0.3 and I
am encountering problems in the form of console error messages like
this:

Dec 13 14:22:17 andre vmunix: resettodr: setting TOD chip to 13-13-22 20:22:17
Dec 13 14:22:17 andre vmunix: resettodr: TOD chip was 13-13-22 20:22:16

These occur about every 8-10 minutes. They also occurred when I ran
ntp.

I have a patch from Sun from Dave Barney which begins as follows:

> There is a bug in SunOS 4.0.3 which causes the Sun 4300 processor
> board to be unable to synchronize the kernel's notion of the time
> of day with the TOD chip.
>
> This applies ONLY to SunOS 4.0.3 for the Sun 4 ...
>
> To patch a running kernel: (will be fixed until next reboot)
>
> # adb -w -k /vmunix /dev/mem
> todget+0x1e0/X
> <old value should be 80a3e006>
> todget+0x1e0/W 80a3e007
> $q
> #

This patch has been applied and has no effect. The values of the
kernel variables tick, tickadj, and dosynctodr are 9997, 5, and 0,
respectively.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Also, we are considering
upgrading to SunOS 4.1.1. Does anyone know for sure if this would
solve the problem?

Thanks very much,
