I have just pulled some information off of louie.udel.edu (thanks, guys!). There were two tar files which contain ntp source, ntp-test and xntp. The documentation with xntp indicates that it is version 2. I couldn't seem to find any version indication for ntp-test. Which ntp should I use? We will be setting up a SPARC2 as a campus-wide time server. We will not have a reference clock, so we will be accessing the stratum 1 and 2 servers as the documentation suggests. Thanks ahead of time for your help. -- Russell Mosemann Internet: mosemann@crcvms.unl.edu Network Analyst Bitnet: mosemann@unlvax1 Computing Resource Center UUCP: ..!uunet!hoss.unl.edu!mosemann University of Nebraska - Lincoln Voice: (402) 472-5930 Fax: 472-5280

xntpd is a later product, implementing the full Version 2 spec. Plain ntpd is a Version 1 product with many (most?) version 2 features implemented. I am not sure I care, but I run xntpd as I believe in having the latest and greatest. xntpd has a host of programming features to ensure full accuracy, not sure how much it matters to those who want to be within a tenth of a second or better of teh truth. As a consequence it is large. xntpd has code tp prevent "excessive" switching from one server to another. I have not looked at the code but I suspect that it sticks for too long to a server that has drifted from the consensus. We are talking of a drift of twenty or so milliseconds. Unfortunately nobody is working on a UNIX implementation of Version 3, which seems to have large algorithmic improvements. Summary: Toss a coin. Mohamed

Does someone have a current list of the timeservers that are available on the net? In particular, are they running ntp or xntp? My ntpd is not syncronizing to servers it used to... It could be a problem with our domain nameserver also. But I would like to know if it is time to update to xntp. Thanks. -- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- David A.
