[comp.protocols.time.ntp] ntpq bug?

mosemann@hoss.unl.edu (Russell Mosemann) (01/27/91)

I have set up xntpd for test purposes on a Sun 4/60. In a month or
so we will be moving it to a SPARC 2 to provide a NTP server for our
domain. xntpd seems to be working just great. However,

1) I start up ntpq (it defaults to localhost), type peer, and get the
list of peers from xntpd. However, they are missing the "*", "+", "."
symbols in the left margin. Is this right? These symbols appear when I
query other servers.

2) When I type "association", I see:

ind assID status conf reach auth condition last_event cnt
===========================================================
  1 61116 9014 yes yes none insane reachable 1
  2 61117 9014 yes yes none insane reachable 1
3 61118 9036 yes yes none insane stratum chg 3

What is an "insane" condition? What other conditions are there, and
what condition should I be seeing there?

3) If NTP_MINPOLL is 64 and NTP_MAXPOLL is 1024, will the polling
interval of xntpd try to stay at the minimum, or will the interval
increase over a period of time (so to speak)?

   Thanks for any insights.
