[comp.protocols.time.ntp] XNTPD V1.3 on Suns running SunOS 4.1.1

ehrlich@cs.psu.edu (Dan Ehrlich) (02/05/91)

I have xntpd running on a number of different model Suns and IBM RTs and
have noticed that the frequency drift is very different depending on which
machine I look at. Here is what I have in /etc/ntp.drift on three of my
systems:

	Sun 4/490	0.126807074
	Sun 4/380	-0.043642800
	IBM RT 6150	0.005678721

Here are a few questions I hope an NTP guru might be inclined to answer:

	1) Are there any patches to SunOS 4.1.1 in the area of time keeping?
I had heard that adjtime(2) was broken in some releases of SunOS
but have not been able to confirm this.

	2) Does the 4/380 really have a better clock that a 4/490?

	3) What might explain the differences in the drifts between the
	   Suns?

	4) Does the IBM RT have a clock that is an order of magnitude better
	   than a Sun?

All of these systems have been running xntpd v1.3 for at least a week.

Thanks in advance.
