ntp-request@TRANTOR.UMD.EDU (NTP mailing list maintenance) (04/06/91)

These messages pass by every now and again, so I thought I'd reply to
the originator of the message as well as the mailing list / newsgroup.

If you want to subscribe to the comp.protocols.time.ntp newsgroup, you
do that by using the USENET newsreader on your machine.

The USENET newsgroup is also gatewayed to a mailing list, called
ntp@TRANTOR.UMD.EDU. Requests to be added or dropped from the mailing
list should be directed to ntp-request@TRANTOR.UMD.EDU which is read
by the mailing list maintainer (me). If you send a message to the
mailing list address 'ntp@TRANTOR.UMD.EDU', it is resent to everyone
else on the list. It is generally considered rude to send "add me" or
"drop me" messages to the whole mailing list.

Please note that the content of the mailing list and the USENET
newsgroup are identical; I *strongly* prefer that people read the
USENET newsgroup rather than getting added to the mailing list.
Mailing list maintenance is a manual activity that I usually perform
every few weeks.

I'm also not real tolorant of broken addresses on the mailing list,
dropping them from the list if they are broken for and bounce messages
back to me on a regular basis. While I'm on this topic; if you
redistribute the mailing list to local recpients, you *must* make sure
that mis-delivery messages are forwarded to the local maintainer and
not to me. There's nothing that I can do about a broken address on
*your* local redistribution list except to drop the whole thing from
the main list.

If there are folks out there that receive the mailing list and would like
to switch over to reading the USENET newsgroup, please let me know and I
will drop you from the list. That will certainly ease the load of a poor
MicroVAX-II trying to deliver messages to hundreds of recpients.

louie
