[comp.protocols.time.ntp] NTP and NOS

ath@ALLSPICE.LCS.MIT.EDU (Andrew Heybey) (05/15/91)

I am thinking about implementing NTP within Phil Karn's NOS for the
PC. I looked at xntpd, and it appears what I would have to do is take
the NTP protocol routines from it, and then write all the glue that
goes between xntp and the machine.

Has anyone done anything like this?

Does anyone have any better ideas on what to use as a starting point?
I chose xntp because it uses fixed-point arithmetic.

If you have been watching the ntp group you would see a few discourageing
signs about ntp on the pc. The pc is meant mostly as a personal desktop
machine with not much knowledge in its operating system and bios for talking
to a network. That does not mean it is impossible to have ntp on a pc but
it should be implemented in terms of using the protocal format for a new
pc based time system. Not sure what the circumstances of your attempt are
but attempting to port the xntp deamon to the pc environment if just for
hardware reasons not to mention operating systems would boarder on insanity.
We tried that and showed only that the next way to look is to making a
demon for the pc from scratch which uses the ntp format when working on the
net. No competent attempt has been made at that. If that is what you will
be attempting then best of luck.
