[comp.protocols.time.ntp] New NTP server using umd1 and dcn1

hoey@AIC.NRL.NAVY.MIL (06/01/91)

Hello NTP server contacts,

Host sun0.aic.nrl.navy.mil [192.26.18.51], a sun-3 running ntpd under
SunOS 4.1, is now configured to use umd1.umd.edu and dcn1.udel.edu as
its reference time base.

The "peer" command (NTP packets sourced in Symmetric-Active mode) is
used because sun0 provides a reference for the other twenty-odd hosts
on its local network.

I chose these servers because they serve SURANET (which is nearby from
here) and showed a fairly low ping round-trip (50 ms for umd1, 500 ms
for dcn1). If you know of any other NRL NTP servers, please let me
know so I can add some closer peers.

Dan,

While you are welcome to chime dcn1, 500 ms delay sounds rather high.
I have noticed a growing degree of non-reciprocal delays on SURA wires,
reaching 20-40 ms on occasion. It may be time to add this feature to my
list of complaints, including growing packet-loss rates which now exceed
three percent.
