[comp.protocols.time.ntp] DEC dts and ntp compatibility

robmack@eik.ii.uib.no (Robert MacKinnon ) (06/03/91)

In the DCE proposal to OSF, the time service agent is DEC's dts
software. Is dts protocol compatible with ntp? Will dts be able
to chime against ntp statum 1 servers or must dts stratum 1 servers
be used?

Robert,

The NTP and DEC Digital Time Synchronizing Service (DTSS as DEC now calls it)
are distinctly different protocols and cannot directly interwork; however,
in most cases they could run on the same machine serving as a time gateway
between the Internet and DECnet protocol stacks. There is a document
comparing the two protocols which has been given to the ANSI committee;
however, this document is not suitable for wide distribution, since somebody
from Computerworld would instantly misuse it. If you want a copy and are
willing to thrash through the intensely technical discussion, please honk.

According to the DEC OSI development team, they are putting the
"hooks" to allow NTP time to be imported to DTSS for Ultrix. I asked
about VMS. DEC wasn't aware that there was an NTP implementation for
VMS. When I told them of the vendor who "had it now" the speaker said
he would take that information back to the development team.
