x LISTENING TO FM USING A SHORTWAVE RECEIVER AJ9S > I HEAR A LOT OF NBFM IN THAT SERVICE. SOME CAN BE (INEFFICIENTLY) > RECEIVED USING SLOPE DETECTION ON AN AM RECEIVER BUT MANY ARE NG. I > THOUGHT THAT THERE MIGHT BE A SIMPLE WAY TO RECEIVE THESE PHONES. > > TNX! > JIM I grafted an old Hammarlund SP600 ("Super Pro") general coverage receiver to an old Motorola land mobile FM receiver strip (A Series) by joining both of them at the 455 kHz IF stage. This allowed 2 new capabilities: 1. allowed FM reception of HF by using SP600 front end, Motorola detector/audio/squelch. 2. allowed AM, CW, SSB reception on VHF using the Motorola front end and SP600 IF/BFO/amplifier Most scanners are double conversion, with IF's of 455 kHz and 10.7 or 10.8 MHz. Most swl radios have a 455 kHz IF stage somewhere. You can crossbreed the two radios to get more capabilities out of the equipment you have. Have fun. -- =============================================================================== Bob Parnass, Bell Telephone Laboratories - ihnp4!ihu1h!parnass - (312)979-5414
