[net.ham-radio] Do call-sign plates encourage theft?

wales@ucla-cs.UUCP (03/31/85)

I asked this question a few weeks ago, and I only got one response, so
I'm going to try one more time:

Do "call-sign" license plates increase the likelihood that your ham gear
will be stolen from your car? (The theory is that crooks will recognize
from the plates that the car contains expensive goodies.)

Let's make the following assumptions (which happen to apply to my car):

    (1) The car contains a 2-meter rig in plain view (not hidden or
camouflaged in any way). There is also a 1/4-wave vertical
whip, permanently mounted on the roof.

    (2) The car has a good burglar alarm, and notices to that effect
are prominently displayed on the car.

    (3) The rig is insured (ARRL policy) -- just in case.

Surely there must be some people out there in "net.ham-radio" with
strongly held opinions one way or the other on this question. Please
share them with me via mail, and I will summarize to the net (assuming
I hear anything, that is).

Thanks.
