QST HR DOT BULLETIN NR 23 FROM DOT HEADQUARTERS TO ALL AMATEURS BT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE TREND SET BY THE FCC AND THE CRRL IN DEREGULATION, THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION HAS DECIDED THAT THE RULE REQUIRING VEHICLES ON PUBLIC ROADS TO DRIVE ON THE RIGHT SIDE WILL NO LONGER BE ENFORCED. IT WAS POINTED OUT BY THE DIRECTOR OF TRANSPORTATION, THAT THIS RULE CREATES AN EXCESS AMOUNT OF FUEL CONSUPTION AND WEAR ON COMMERCIAL VEHICLES AS WELL A NOT MAKING EFFICIENT USE OF THE ROADS. HE POINTED OUT THAT, WITH THIS RULE NO LONGER IN FORCE, BOTH LANES OF A TWO-WAY HIGHWAY COULD BE USED FOR TRAFFIC IN THE SAME DIRECTION WHEN THE MAJORITY OF TRAFIC IS HEADED IN THE SAME DIRECTION. FURTHER REDUCTION IN FUEL WOULD RESULT BY ALLOWING VEHICLES TO RUN ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROAD WHEN THE ROAD TURNS LEFT, THEREBY DECREASING THE DISTANCE THE VEHICLE MUST TRAVEL. A FURTHER SAVING WOULD RESULT IN LAW ENFORCEMENT, SINCE POLICE WOULD NO LONGER HAVE TO PERSUE AND TICKET PEOPLE DRIVING VEHICLES ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD.
