[comp.os.os2.misc] HELP OS/2 Drivers

dennett@usage.csd.unsw.oz.au (Dennett Jaques) (08/02/90)

G'day there,

I'm trying to configure OS/2 1.21 (Microsoft Version) on a 286. I dont get
very far at all though, because my machine hangs when I run the install disk.

I have a feeling that OS/2 can not recognise my hard disk.
I have a Mitsubishi 65Mbyte RLL drive with an Adaptec 2372B disk controller.

This controller has its own BIOS which is probably the root of the problem.

My question is - does anyone have an OS/2 driver for this controller?

I just read an article in one of the OS/2 news groups stating that Adaptec
had drivers available for their SCSI controllers and thought it was at least
worth asking.

Many thanks for any help .........

  Cheers.

  Dennett Jaques.

Congratulations; you have correctly identified your problem.
Unfortunately there are no (to the best of my knowledge) OS/2 drivers for
RLL drives. My suggestion is to get and IDE controller and disk
(Conner is a good choice) and replace the RLL drive/controller with it
if you want to use OS/2.

I had the same problem when installing IBM OS/2 1.20 on my machine.

I use a WD 1006SR2 controller (also RLL) with a Seagate ST-4096
(formatted as RLL :-).

The RLL drive was NOT the source of the problem. It was the keyboard.
Several enhanced keyboard do not pass the driver's installation-time
tests and hang the system with 1.20. I had a Monterey keyboard and had
to replace it by a Cherry Keyboard, which now works. After booting with
the Cherry keyboard, I can even replace it with the Monterey and this
then works too, but it does not pass the boot tests.

Maybe thats your problem too, try another keyboard ...

Thats wrong!

I am succesfully running IBM OS/2 1.2 with a RLL controller & disk,
WD 1006SR2 and Seagate ST-4096 (RLL'ized :-).

No special disk driver is needed for OS/2, the standard AT bus disk
driver that comes with OS/2 works well. As far as I know, some IBM PS/2
disks are also RLL. The interface of MFM and RLL controllers is both
ST-412/506, with different data rate and sectors per track.
Carefully written disk drivers can handle both.

Sorry, I used OS/2 v1.1 on an adaptec RLL controller, talking to a Micropolis
80M hard disk, with no problems at all. The adaptec controllers emulate
(in hardware) the WD1003 hard disk interface.

I think the problem is somewhere else. Many clone BIOS's cannot run OS/2,
and there are also problems with clone keyboards too.
