[comp.os.os2.misc] OS/2 and floppy drive problems

mattm@apollo.cs.pittsburgh.edu (Matt Mossholder) (10/25/90)

Hi all, seems like I'm having some problems installing IBM OS/2 1.2 EE
of late. I am using:

C&T chipset, AMI BIOS 386/33 motherboard
		PERSTOR PS180-16FN HD/FD Controller
TEAC 1.44 MB Floppy Drive (A:)
TEAC 1.2 MB Floppy Drive (B:)
		ST251-1 HD

The symptoms are:

Half of the time it will start to boot, showing the IBM
copyright, etc. Then bomb out on a line in the config.sys
(usually COUNTRY.SYS, but I have also seen the DOSCALL1 DLL,
		the MSG DLL, and clock01.sys)

The other half of the time, it will go anywhere from just past
the copyright message to just after it asks me to insert
installation disk #1 before it issuse a Trap error 000C
followed by Trap error 000D. It states the 000C trap is
		a floppy device error (A:).

Could this be the floppy controller on the Perstor? I don't think it is the drive, because it seems to work fine under MS-DOS 3.3 and Zenith MS-DOS
3.31. Is it the fact that I am try to run IBM's OS/2? Would CompuAdd OS/2 1.2
possibly solve the problem?

I guess for now I'm going to have to stick to DOS/Windows 3.0 on this
machine and save OS/2 for the (yech) CGA 286 2 MB laptop. (sigh)

IBM OS/2 1.2 (I don't know about others) often has serious problems
accessing floppy drives. My drives also work well under DOS but I often
get "Drive not ready" even when a disk is in the drive. Retry often
solves the problem but sometimes it does NOT and the machine crashes
badly, and hitting three times Ctrl-Alt-NumLock is required to reboot
(Ctrl-Alt-Del does not work). This is always nice for the HPFS ...
When I boot OS/2 from a floppy, I also sometimes get "cannot access
country.sys" but not as often as you write. I couldn't yet figure it out
what the problem is (probably timing problems or interrrupts from the
controller) and there is no solution.
