[comp.os.os2.misc] CD-ROM for OS/2 ?

tankus@hsi86.hsi.com (Ed Tankus) (01/21/91)

I would like to know who makes Erasable or WORM optical disk subsystems
that run unde OS/2. The disks would be used for archiving engineering
drawings, etc. The product would have to run on a Dell 333D 386/33MHz
machine.

Please let me know price, availability, and RELIABILITY. No, I haven't
tried DELL but they're first on the list.

Thanks!

This month's (Dec 90/Jan 91) OS/2 and Windows Magazine reviews the Iomega
LaserSafe. It's magneto-optical based.

From their Info File and Snapshot:
-----------------
Iomega
1821 West 4000 South
Roy, UT 84067
(800) 456-5222

Subsystem: $4,999
Media: $299 (per disk)
MCA: $399
ISA: $265
[This uses a SCSI interface and can share - chain - with other devices.]

Runs only under OS/2 for now. (So there!)

Highlights:
	improved security
595.2 MB [double sided disks - manual side change]
	compact [10.33"x10.33"x4.88"]
Winchester interface [as opposed to WORM-style]
fast access [avg. access 66.7 msecs.]
10 year media use [need to be destructively verified periodically]

-------
For the same cost you could get a BIG hard drive and have some money left over
for the DAT drive to back it up to.

I suppose the removeable media is of interest to some. Also, it's quite rugged.

I'm holding out for 1Gig and up...
