I just got a couple Northgate systems with the built-in ATI graphics cards, and one with an Orchid Pro Designer. Northgate says that their OS/2 (1.21!) will support 256 colors. I can't find out, however, until they send me the 3.5" versions of OS/2!! I would like to know what software supports 256 colors. I've received lots of (mis)information. One woman told me that my color scanner (Epson) would never be supported under OS/2 (1.3) since OS/2 doesn't support color. (???) I have OS2GIF.EXE. I am able to use the 256 color mode, but only at low-res and not under PM. (Why do people keep calling it "Program Manager"?) Anyone know of updates that allow this to use the higher resolutions? BTW, I'm working on a picture database (using Imara soon). Monochrome is o.k. for printed music, but I also want to capture color output from an electronic camera (Mavica). thanks for the help! --kyler

It may be on the net somewhere too, I don't know. This does 256 colours in a PM window. It's slow as molasses, though. But it's the best that I'm aware of. There's another pmgif (pmgif10.zip?) that I think Alan Ballard has up at mtsg.ubc.ca. That's much faster, but only does 16 colours. > > BTW, I'm working on a picture database (using Imara soon). Eh? I can print a color bitmap to a QMS color postscript printer using metafiles with no problem on 1.3 . If you've get your ATI to work at 800x600x{16,256}, I want your drivers! ATI themselves only have a v1.1 800x600x16 driver... >I would like to know what software supports 256 colors. That this is happening at a large company like Epson is disgusting. >[...] >BTW, I'm working on a picture database (using Imara soon). If you need a PDL or Desktop Publishing, Pagemaker 4.0 supports 24-bit color (out for Windows, Mac). Anybody know when the OS/2 version ships? -- Jeremy Wohl / wohl@max.physics.sunysb.edu / jwohl@csserv1.ic.sunysb.edu
