[comp.os.os2.misc] Summary: emacs-like for OS/2?

colin@nbc1.ge.com (Colin Rafferty) (04/18/91)

Well, I have received many varied replies to my original question:
What is the closest thing that there is to Emacs on the PS/2 running
OS/2?

First of all, thanks to everybody who answered, both in private email
and in public postings. It was all very helpful. Also, my apologies
to starting a flame war on gnu.emacs.help. I didn't mean to.

Here are the results.

1. GNU emacs does not run on OS/2. Someone is currently working on a
port, but has not gotten it to Beta (or even Alpha) level yet. In
fact, it will not work until OS/2 goes to version 2.0 (because of
horrendous things that it does with pointers).

2. MicroEmacs 3.10 has been ported to OS/2. It is free and can be
   ftp'd from mims-iris.waterloo.edu and funic.funet.fi. It has a
C-like extension language. It also runs on other systems.

3. Epsilon by Lugaru Software is a very good editor which is
emacs-like with a C-like extension language. It costs $195 list.
Phone is (412) 421-5911. It runs under DOS and UNIX also.

4. Brief by Solution Systems. This is what I'm buying. It has the
functionality of Emacs with the only real adjustment being
   bindings.

5. SAGE Professional Editor. Has a turnkey emulation of Epsilon. It
has a c/awk-like extension language. Can use a mouse with it. Is
available at The Programmers' Shop (1-800-421-8006).

If anyone wants more specific information, write to me, and I'll send
you a bunch of mail that I got.
