[comp.os.os2.misc] Epson printer driver problems with Excel

rommel@Informatik.TU-Muenchen.DE (Kai-Uwe Rommel) (05/06/91)

I had reported printing problems with Excel 2.2 under OS/2 1.3 a few
weeks ago. Thanks to a hint of a kind person to check paper formats etc.
to be the same as in the Print Manager setup menu I got it partially
working. A problem with the Epson printer driver remains:

In the Print Manager setup I can set up the paper format to be used, the
graphics resolution, page orientation and choose between tractor and cut
sheed feeder (which I have on my LQ-500). These settings were correct
and are saved in os2.ini. However, Excel provides a Printer Setup
command in the file menu and uses a different set of printer settings
than the system default ones. This means, one has again to set up paper
format, resolution, orientation and paper transport.

The problem was, that Excel does not print unless the paper format names
used by itself and the system defaults are the same (and probably the
other settings too). Of course I could set up the printer again in Excel
but the Paper Transport radio buttons in the printer drivers setup box
are disabled when called from within Excel and they show a default of
tractor and I cannot change this setting. So I have to switch the
systemwide setup to tractor and to play with a custom paper format and
still have problems with page breaks.

Did anyone else find a way around this annoying bug?
Is it in the printer driver or in Excel (I'm not shure)?

Thanks for any hint,

Kai Uwe Rommel

Regarding printing problems with Excel: I have no personal experience with
the Epson printer that you mention. I *do* know though (and believe that I
have mentioned it here before) that Excel 2.2 has known difficulties with
printing (as has Lotus 123/G 1.0 without corrective service). So, I *strongly*
suggest that you contact MS or your retailer to get a free upgrade to 1.21.
Furtheron, I suggest that you check *which* Epson-driver you are using. You
should use the one that comes with OS/2 1.3, not the one that comes with
Excel. Good luck!

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that I use the driver that comes with 1.3
which is the newest one available to me.

It should of course have been 2.21!

If you bought IBM's version of OS/2, you should never use Microsofts drivers.
IBM will refuse to support you if you use the drivers. Another interesting
note, there are newer printer drivers than the ones that came with 1.3. Some
of Microsofts products (notable Excel and Word) that have one or two problems
with them when printing graphics. Of course, Microsoft has fixed there own
drivers to work with all there products. And they wonder why they are being
investigated by the government.
