[comp.os.os2.misc] ET4000 R E M I N D E R

janeri@Lise.Unit.NO (Jan Eri) (05/09/91)

hello ET4000 owners,

To all of you that have downloaded the OS/2 beta drivers
(800*600*16 and 1024*768*16) from nic.funet.fi (128.214.6.100)
or elsewhere: ** Remember to mail me if you find any peculiarities. **

I have notified Tseng that several of you are waiting for 256 color
drivers and also that some of you wanted drivers with smaller icons
(1024).

Also, I know that these drivers don't support Boca or PerfectView by
ViewSonic very well (even if they are ET4000 based), but don't
expect Tseng Labs to care about that.
(According to Boca they are working on such drivers; anybody with more information?)

I have tested both drivers with a STB PowerGraph VGA with 1MB and both
work fine, no problems at all. The screen postions were a bit funny but
no problem to adjust them on a Nanao 9080i display. The 1024x768 driver
works only NON-interlaced, so be careful, NEC 3D owners (or similar).

The 1024x768 driver can easily be patched to use the small icons at
location 0x2DE02 from "40 00 40 00" to "20 00 20 00" with some binary
file editor.

Additionally the drivers don't work with VGA monitors, they obviously need true

multiscans. The (DOS) BIOS however *does* work at 800 (56 Hz) and 1024
(interlaced) on my VGA monitor.

I have reported here that these drivers work well. At the first shot I
have overseen a fact that I was pointed to now:

Both drivers, the 800x600 too, use higher refresh rates of about 70Hz.
This requires a monitor capable of about 50kHz (800x600) or 58kHz
(1024x768, but this driver seems to use 66Hz so an 50kHz monitor may be
ok for this driver too).

That means, nobody will probably be able to use these drivers with a NEC
3D monitor or other monitor of this class (capable of up to 38kHz), not
even the 800x600 driver.
