[comp.os.os2.misc] Does 2.0 have any built-in toys/accessories?

todd@pvi.UUCP (Todd Bradley x293) (05/24/91)

Hi folks. I'm a new OS/2 user and just installed the 1.3 SE this week.
I've been using MS Windows for about 11 months now. I got to wondering
what, if any, accessories and toys are being packaged with OS/2 2.0.
OS/2 1.3 has a noticeable lack of the kinds of built in accessories
that made Windows so attractive. I'm talking about things like Write,
Terminal, the cardfiler, and, of course, Solitaire (which I believe
went farther than any other single feature of Windows in making it
accessible to the general public).

Are there any plans to include any of this type of nifty accessories
in the OS/2 2.0 release? If not, why not? Does the beta version
have anything like this included?

C'mon, Solitaire is the only _really_ useful piece which comes with
Windows 3.0! Actually, MS has tried to use their much-ballyhooed
"WLO" porting facility on these programs at least twice. Both times
they created buggy programs which weren't worth the cost of a
download (from what I hear).

Keep your ear to the ground, tho, because eventually they'll manage
to port these utils to OS/2 1.x using their "getting-better-all-the-
time" WLO library.

OS/2 v2 won't need "ported" version, as it will run Windows stuff
native.

Yes. OS/2 2.0 will apparently come with the same little 'applets' that come
with Windows 3, as well as some new ones, like 'Neko the Cat', a really
cute little cat that chases after your mouse pointer, and goes to sleep when
it catches it.... I have Solitaire for OS/2 1.X - it's identical to the
Win 3 one - it's the Windows program run through MS's SDK - and I've had
zero problems with it... (I also have the CARDFILE program)

I've never heard this story. Interesting...

But this assumes that you have both Windows AND OS/2. Most users
(as has been said here again and again) will probably feel like
if they have one, they don't need the other. And even if MS
ported the Windows toys to OS/2, I'm sure they wouldn't give
them away free to OS/2 users.

Well, that's good news in my opinion. I've got Neko for Windows and
I can imagine my parents enjoying it, so it will probably make a good
"comfort toy" for new OS/2 users (like Solitaire was). I'm surprised
2.0 will come with the same "applets" as Windows, though. I thought
most of those were Microsoft-written programs.

On Compuserve, there's a forum called MSOPSYS. About every six weeks
someone shows up and asks where the WLO versions of the Windows utilities
are. The above story is given. Perhaps the latest version of WLO
fixed the problems. To my knowledge, tho, the ported accessories are
still not available on CIS.

I downloaded them last week. They are very slow loading (eight DLLs?) but
seem to work tolerably well. I think they were in a new section of the CIS
MSOPSYS libraries.

I'll put this games-stuff to rest once-and-for-all. The 2.0 games are
*NOT* ported from Microsoft Windows.

I should know, since I wrote a number of them. :)

Easy, Larry! We're obviously talking about different things here. We're
talking about the Windows accessories which have been ported to OS/2 1.x
using the (in)famous WLO. You must be referring to games which will be
coming along with v2...
