[comp.os.os2.misc] Apple Laserwriter and serial port questions

weiss@theory.lcs.mit.edu (Paul G. Weiss) (05/30/91)

I am having difficulty using my Apple Laserwriter to print using
OS/2. This has led me to try to understand serial port handshaking
and some questions have come up:

(1) Does anyone know what kind of handshaking the Laserwriter does,
i.e. what RS232 circuit it uses?

(2) The mode command allows you to specify the baud rate, parity,
and several different handshaking modes. Also you can specify some
of these things using the Control Panel. However they don't seem
to know about each other. By this I mean that changes that you make
with MODE are not reflected in the Control Panel and vice versa. So,
which of these methods is to be used?

(3) Assuming you are using MODE to initialize a serial port at boot time,
should you use a RUN command in CONFIG.SYS or run it from STARTUP.CMD?

(4) If the Print Spooler is already running will it be affected by
MODE commands, or must I reboot.

(5) If anyone is successfully using an Apple Laserwriter can you tell
me how you are setting it up and how your null modem cable is wired?

Thanks,
Paul
