I have a Gateway 2000 33MHz 386 computer, and I am thinking about getting OS/2 1.3 Standard Edition now to get ready for OS/2 2.0 coming out this fall, hopefully :) What I would like to know if anyone has run into problems running OS/2 on a non-ibm machine, specifically a Gateway 2000. Any hints or insight would be appreciated. Thanks in Advance, Ray Konopka konopka@ihlpm.att.com

Hi folks, managed to install OS/2 1.3 on my machine. It took some "hacking" that the ordinary user will certainly not attempt. With MSDOS 5.0 out and it's selling like hot cakes (several Eggheads store in the local area) and only 600,000 OS/2 compared with 40 million DOS users. I like to thank some people on usenet who work for IBM who had the technical writeup of the solution, and I had to get a BASEDD01.SYS file from the 1.2 to work. Nobody would give it to me, so I called up the IBM device driver board and grab a copy of their OS/2 1.2 CSD (FIX) diskette 1, and forunately I was able to boot that disk. Once the disk was booted and recognized the hard drive (it worked), I copied to a backup of 1.3. HOWEVER the installation was not a piece of cake and it took a while (1 hour) to hack more at it. THe problem was that for the 1.2 BASEDD01.SYS to work, I had to delete all DISK*.SYS file for it to bootup. The problem is that the installation disk is looking for DISK1.SYS to copy to the OS/2 root directory. So, I had to make two different installation disk, one to boot up (without DISK1.SYS) and the other with DISK1.SYS so after installing DISK5, I inserted the second (with DISK1.SYS) back into the system. I managed to get dual boot working after the second time, and everything is fine. DOS 4.01 and OS/2 is living happly. RIGHT now, I'm in OS/2 and using TE/2 to type this message. Things are fine, and I like someone to post this into IBM, so they can know what the frustation is in installing this thing. Believe me the ordinary user would have given up by now. So, Thanks to IBMers on usenet, the IBM board for having the maintence release which are bootable, and various number of usenet users. You comments are appreciated.
