I'd like to make this group aware of a great (relatively) new magazine called "Midnight Engineering", The Journal of Personal Product Engineering. This magazine is aimed at us, the people who are trying to make a business fly from our basements. Already it has an all-star cast of writers including Don Lancaster, Gary Entsminger, Karl Lunt, Clark Calkins, Larry Fogg, Ralph Lindstrom, Vladymir Rogov (of Rogov Design Studio) and last but not least, ME! In case you think this cast of characters looks a lot like "MicroCornucopia", it is no mere coincidence. The publisher, William Gates (not the %&^*^* bill gates!) picked up the subscription list and many of the writers from "Microcorucopia". And unlike David Thompson, Bill is pacing his growth so as to (hopefully) avoid burnout. I've had the urge to write professionally for many years but this is the first magazine good enough to actually make me get up off my duff and do it! It's that good. My first article will appear in the next issue (Volume 1, Number 6) and is about - you guessed it - using contract engineering as a means of financing a startup. The cover price is kinda rough at $6 but the subscription price is reasonable - $19.95 for a year of 6 issues, 7 if you pay with your subscription. Circulation is currently at about 25,000 and the magazine is in the newstand distribution channel. If you're interested, call Bill at 303-225-0856 or write to him at Midnight Engineering Magazine 111 E. Drake Rd. Ste 7041 Ft. Collins, CO 80525 Bill will send you a sample mag on request. If you call, be prepared to chat a spell, as Bill LOVEs to talk :-) Be sure to tell him you saw my notice on Usenet. I'm encouraging him to become a presence on the net and I'd like for him to see the size of the user base. I'd like to second this. It's a great magazine. It's been around since January,
and it's a combination of hardware hacking and Inc. magazine. I've
already gotten much useful info from it, especially about marketing and
other non-technical stuff (which most of us are not so good at, unlike
putting together some great hardware or software).
Hopefully Bill can be persuaded to start a BBS, like Steve Ciarcia's BBS
or Byte magazine. Alternately, we could use the uucp network.
