[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] IBM PS/2 with faulty power cables

poffen@sj.ate.slb.com (Russ Poffenberger) (07/07/90)

I just received a letter that may affect a number of people with IBM PS/2
systems.

IBM has discovered a potential safety problem with the power cables on a
limited number of the IBM Personal System/2 (R) systems. While there have been
no reports of electrical shock or injury resulting from this defect, situations
may exist where users couls be exposed to potential injury through electrical
shock. The safety defect applies only to those systems which have not been
previously installed and will prevent the PS/2 (R) from operating. IBM PS/2
systems which are installed and operating are not affected by the potential
safety problem.

The affected cables are marked with a "Multilec" label embossed on the plug end
of the cord and were sold through IBM channels in the United States, Canada,
Latin America, and Asia. Multilec power cable shipments from IBM were limited
to a subset of PS/2 Model 55SX systems within the United States. However,
since thecables are compatible with other members of the PS/2 family and may be
shipped with additional PS/2 models originating from other countries, it is
advised that any PS/2 power cable be checked for the Multilec label prior to
initial installation. Multilec cables will be replaced by IBM with power cables
that meet IBM safety standards. Initial system installation should not be
attempted using the Multilec cable.

To obtain replacement power cables, contact IBM as soon as possible at
1-800-IBM-SERV (1-800-426-7378) or return the cable to the IBM Authorized
Remarketer. As normal warranty provisions apply, there is no charge for this
replacement activity. Shipments from IBM after June 19, 1990 are not affected
by this safety concern, but you should continue to check for the Multilec
cable due to delays in the distribution channel.

If you require any additional assistance, contact your IBM Marketing
Representative or Authorized Remarketer.
