[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] multivolume archive

rcleon@lso.win.tue.nl (Leon Oninckx) (07/18/90)

We have a couple of campuslicensed software packages
we want to distribute to a selected group of users.
These packages are rather large, about 4 MB each.
We have installed the software on one machine and want
to use some sort of tree-backup/restore mechanism to create
a fast-and-easy installation distribution.
I thought about creating self-extracting ZIParchives that are
as large as a diskette (either 360k or 1.44M) wherein
the files and pathnames are stored, but there's no
way to specify the archivelength. Again, it has to be an EASY
installation, so I can't use PC-TOOLS PCBACKUP or a similar
program because they're too difficult for most users.
DOS BACKUP would be nice, but that doesn't give me any
filecompression facilities.
Can someone give me a hint on how to create such an
easy-installation distribution? Please reply to me via email.
Thanks,

-Leon
