[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] software implementations of MNP protocol for modems

shankar@are.berkeley.edu (Shankar Subramanian) (07/22/90)

If I remember right there were some recent postings about software
implementations of the MNP protocol for modems. What emerged from the
discussion was that the software implementation had quite a high overhead.
So I didn't give the topic a second thought until I found that a text file
I was editing using vi under Unix was corrupted as a result of noise
on the line. Of course, when one is using the PC as a terminal, the high
overhead of the software emulation shouldn't matter a great deal because
one isn't typing all that fast. To come to the point, would someone who
has used the MNP emulation let me know where I can get the software and
whether I can use it with kermit, the terminal emulation package I'm using
now. I checked the SIMTEL20 archives and found a MNP2 emulator, but that
has to be compiled into whatever terminal emulation package one is using,
or so I gather.
