[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Incompatable term emulation for pc telecom packages?

markad@blake.acs.washington.edu (Mark Donnell) (07/24/90)

I thought it would be straightforward. All I wanted to do was use my pc
at home as a terminal on a sun or next at work. But when I try to
phone in with procomm or qmodem using vt100 emulation, I cannot reliably
use VI or Emacs. I've tried the vt-100 termcaps on both machines plus
a good vt100 termcap from another machine on the NeXT. The lines
on the screen dont match up correctly, and emacs seems totally blown.
alot of the ctrl-keys dont seem to work right. (ex: open file then try
to quit wioth ctrl-z and it comes back with 'do you want to save' or
whatever. It beeps whenever I press most keys, and others generate
some sort of 'inapropriate key' sort of message). I have tried it in
8-n-1 and 7-e-1 for the fun of it.
Any suggestions?

Thanks
Mark

What you need is a terminal programme with "authentic" enough
emulation to use VI.

I've successfully used both
PC-VT (several versions, shareware)
Professional YAM (from Omen Technology, about $US 150.00, at least
that is what I paid about 5 years ago).

Here is more info on PC-VT :

PC-VT version 10.0	USER Supported Software

					1 January 1990
9888 Carroll Center Road Suite 113
					San Diego, CA 92126

PC-VT is a VT-100/102 and Tek 4010/4014 Emulator for the IBM PC
or PC Clones. PC-VT runs on the PC, the PCXT, and the PCAT under DOS
2.x and 3.x.

This version of PC-VT is the complete Professional version which
has been available for about 3 years. I have taken all of the
enhancements (and bug fixes) of that version and moved them into the
User Supported version of PC-VT. The Professional Version is no longer
sold commercially.

Now more about the version 10.0 of PC-VT. It includes an
enhanced version of the VT-100 emulator and a Tektronix 4010/4014
emulator. It supports both 132 column mode and high resolution graphics
with the addition of the Everex Edge board and high resolution graphics
with the addition of the Hercules graphics board. It supports the VMS
EVE editor as well as EDT, VI and Emacs with special Keypad key
bindings. Windows are used for file transfer and the program can be
completely controlled by the host for automatic file transfer. The
keyboard can be remapped to suit your taste, screen colors can be set
with Escape Sequences, and you can recall screen data which has scrolled
off the top of the screen.

I have versions of XMODEM for the VAX running VMS ,for UNIX
System V and for UNIX 4.2BSD and a version of ZMODEM which runs under
Unix. You can get those by sending me a formatted 360Kb diskette for
each one you need and a pre-paid pre-addressed diskette mailer. Make
sure you tell me which ones you want. The XMODEM and ZMODEM programs
are public domain.

Some of the enhancements for version 10.0 of PC-VT are:

1. The dialer has been enlarged to 100 entries.
2. ZMODEM and YMODEM are now supported using the external DSZ program from
	Omen Technology, Inc.
3. PC-VT Supports COM3 and COM4 for serial communications
4. The printer escape sequences are handled more like a VT terminal.
5. PC-VT does a better job of emulating the escape sequences to the local
	printer.
6. PC-VT handles LPT1 through LPT4 and COM1 through COM4 for the
	printer port.
7. RTS/CTS flow control has been added.
8. Added a SETUP feature to disable PC-VT Private Sequences.
9. Full Tektronix 4010/4014 Emulation.

You can always get the latest version of PC-VT from me. Call my
phone number below to find out what the latest version number is.

To get PC-VT, you can :

	1. Call my ATHENA SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT GROUP board at
619-549-3927 and download the file PC-VT100.ZIP.

	2. Send me 2 formatted 360K floppies or 1 formatted 1.2M floppy
along with a self-addressed postage paid floppy mailer and I will return
them in the mail.

	3. Send me $9 for postage and handling and I will send them in
the mail.

I would appreciate any comments which you might have regarding
the program or its usefulness. When you write, please indicate the
version number of PC-VT which you are using.
