[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] BIOS Upgrade Questions

flash@lehi3b15.csee.Lehigh.EDU (Stephen Corbesero) (07/24/90)

I need to get a new or different BIOS for an AT/386 clone. It appears
that the Phoenix BIOS version currently installed does not correctly
initialize ROM extensions on a warm reboot. I discovered this after
hours of watching my new SCSI controller work fine from a cold boot on
its own, but get ignored when I hit reset. The tech support person at
Always Technologies(?) (IN-2000 SCSI Controller Board manuafacturer)
confirmed my fears that the system BIOS was the culprit.

The questions I need answers to include:

1] Is a BIOS chip specific to the whole motherboard, or just the
chip set, in this case C&T 386?

2] Does anyone know the address and/or phone numbers of Phoenix,
     AMI, and Award?

3] Has anyone else had similar problems and what was their solution?

Inquiring minds....

Thanks in advance.

Most clone motherboards are so similar and that they can use a generic BIOS.
Only MBs that the manufacturer has deliberately done funky stuff too
needs a special BIOS. The chip set is another element that makes the
motherboards more common. C&T is by far the most popular. Both Phoenix
and AMI make BIOSes to deal with and take advantage of the features.

There is a company that advertises in The Computer Shopper BIOS
upgrades. I have never dealt with them, but they appear to deal
directly with Phoenix and AMI and offer the latest versions of all their
BIOSes.

I too would be interested in the phone number for Phoenix. I have a few
questions reguarding some possible conflicts with Wordstar 5.0 thru 6.0.
