[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] 16" monitors--help wanted

tseng@janus.Berkeley.EDU (Ho-Ping Tseng) (07/25/90)

Pardon me if this has been discussed recently.

I'm looking for a 16" monitor, but I haven't been able to
test them effectively at the local stores. The primary candidates
are: Nanao 9070U, NEC 4D, and Mitsubishi 6605. If anyone has had
good or bad experiences with them, please share them with me. I know 4D
has received good reviews lately, but the one I saw was not all that
impressive. I also heard from someone that their quality control is
not all that good. In addition, there seems to be a shortage of it.

The best prices for these locally are:
	9070U -- $1019
	4D -- $1150
	6605 -- $1099.
Are these in line with other places? Any chance these would drop?

Based on the price and what I saw, I think I'm leaning toward the 9070U.
The 6605 can do 1280x1024. Would that be effective on a 16" screen?

Any help would be appreciated.

BTW. Has anyone had any problem with Genoa 6400? I'm choosing between
it and Orchid ProDesigner+.

Well,

I've heard that the Nanao is more suseptiple to "burn-in" fatigue.. I know
monitors are all suseptiple to this.. But, some guy had a problem when
using the monitors from Nanao after a short period of time.

The NEC 4D maybe your best choice.

For the card, the Pro Designer Plus is an older version. Get the Pro
Designer II. Which gives has more drivers and compatibility. I don't know
about the Genoa.

I'm not familiar with any of these monitors, but I can say that I have
had a 16" 1280x1024 monitor on my UNIX workstation for the last 18 months,
and it is superb. I would never want to go back to the old 19" monster I
used to have. Someday, when I can justify the expense, a 16" 1280x1024
monitor with matching video board will be my dream system.
