I would like to upgrade a XT with an accelerator board (probably a 286 type). Can anyone recommend a solution and source?? The main use is some spreadsheet calculations and a little word processing. The XT has a 8087 coprocessor which I would like to be able to use as most accelerator do not include a floating point coprocessor. A key requirement is low price as an expensive option would be buying a new computer. Thanks alot. -- ************************************************************ Gavin Zau Dept of Chemical Engineering, MIT gavin@caf.mit.edu mefl@eagle.mit.edu

My recommendation would be to check out the SOTA 286 accelerator. Can be gotten from PC Connection for around $300. They work in a wide variety of PC-compatables, and the SOTA support is excellent. They have a BBS -- 1-408-745-0326, 8N1, FDX -- if you have compatability concerns. An 8087 coprocessor will not work in conjunction with a 80286 chip. For one thing, the 80287 is a different shape, and different inside as well. Bob M., PSU-Harrisburg.

In my experience the perfprmance boost from an accelerator isn't really worth it. For the same money ($200 or so) you can buy an AT motherboard for your XT and get a much bigger performance boost. -- Leonard Erickson ...!tektronix!reed!percival!bucket!leonard CIS: [70465,203] "Oregon Guild Gold Card -- don't leave home without it!"
