[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Two HD controllers on a PC?

close@lunch.wpd.sgi.com (Diane Barlow Close) (08/13/90)

I have an old PC-class machine that I decided to add a hard card to (a Plus
10 meg hardcard). I want to continue to use the original hard drive, a Xebec
9710H 10 meg drive and controller. That's the problem -- the two drives/
controllers don't get along at all together. With both plugged in the
machine refuses to even boot. Since the power-on diagnostics run fine, this
is not a power problem.

I have a program that displays the "system I/O table". It shows one spot only
for fixed disk, 320-32F. Does this mean the PC can only have one controller?
That same table shows a lot of "extra" slots available (e.g. prototype cards,
ega alternates, etc.). Can I get my controller to use one of these "slots"
instead?

That's another problem -- I don't have the docs for either drive! (Both
were bought used). The Xebec is the drive I want as drive 2 (i.e. drive
D). The Xebec has four switches labelled "I/O", four labelled "OPTN"
(option?), one labelled "RD", and three labelled "ROM". The only switches
on are "RD", and the two middle "I/O" switches.

Any comments or suggestions?
