[net.ham-radio] Cheap 1984 WRTH & military electronics book

wmartin@brl-tgr.ARPA (Will Martin ) (05/28/85)

Regarding our recent discussion about the World Radio TV Handbook (WRTH)
and the prices thereof:

I just got a new catalog from ye olde Publishers Central Bureau, only
the fifth or seventh this year so far (:-), but this is a "special sale"
catalog (where have I heard that before...), with some of their books marked
down to a lower price. (What hurts is that I bought some at the higher
price! The knife of self-recrimination twists slowly in the gut...)

Anyway, one of the items on sale is newly-listed (I've never seen one of
these listed in a PCB catalog before); the 1984 WRTH! For $6.00, which
is probably about what it's worth, but is much lower than other sources
of back issues (like Century Print Shop). The stock number is 446235.
If you don't have a WRTH, getting last year's for this price is probably
worthwhile. As I mentioned in an earlier posting, the 1985 frequency
listings are already nearly obsolete, so the unchanging or more-stable
data (like station addresses, interval signals, etc.) is probably good
enough in the preceeding year's issue to be useful.

Another radio-related book, marked down on special sale, is a real
bargain. It is the 1979-80 issue of JANE'S MILITARY COMMUNICATIONS, one
of the authoritative Jane's series of guides to military equipment.
It is marked down to $7.98 (original list $99.50) [I had bought my
copy at around $15, sob!]. The stock number is 391562. This is a good
guide to then-current military electronics gear, which might show up
on the surplus market, or fall into your hands whilst strolling through
Central America, and could be helpful in identifying this or that odd
piece of surplus stuff you happen to get ahold of.

A few notes about ordering these, if you are interested:

1) You must mention "special sale department #345".

2) Offer is good through Labor Day, '85.

3) There is a per-order shipping charge of $2.60, no matter how much
you buy -- I recommend you ask co-workers for recent catalogs or check
you local or work libraries, so you can see if there is other stuff you
want to add to ordering just one or two books.

4) These people always stick you with a "credit voucher" if you pay by
check and stuff is out-of-stock, and back-orders take forever, if they ever
show up. I tried asking for a refund check instead of a credit voucher
with my just-sent-in order; we'll see if they pay attention...

Here is their address: Publishers Central Bureau
		       One Champion Ave., Dept 345
		       Avenel, NJ 07131

(Any of you New Jersey netters happen to know if they have a retail outlet
where you can just go and buy this stuff at the catalog sale prices?)

Usual disclaimer -- I've been buying from these people for years, but really
don't like them much. I certainly have no interest or connection with them.
